Benched – En el banco

Over a year ago Douglas found this small bench in the trash. It was cute, but the back was broken off. He left it on the porch for me to find in the morning. You can see that it has already lived several lives. I am happy to give it another.

Last Halloween, I sanded the bench in order to paint it. I was about to attach the back to the seat, when Douglas questioned my ability to do so. In hindsight I wish that I had not listened to him. I think that I could have done it.

Instead, I started to recover the seat. I already had all of the materials I needed in the basement. Sometimes it is a good thing that I rarely get rid of anything. I cut the foam to fit and then batting to cover it. Crème and Ponche helped out.

Crème y Ponche me ayudaron.

Obviously, I don’t believe in rushing projects because I waited another month before I covered the seat with some velvet fabric I had stored. I had bought these old curtains at a Goodwill several years ago and have used them for several projects. Look how tiny Ponche was!

My lack of speed became more apparent as I waited exactly ten months to finally attach the back to the seat. And when I say attach it, I mean have it put back on by my brother.

The next day I painted the bench, leaving behind my procrastinating ways. Don’t worry; they are already back.

El día siguiente pinté el banco dejando atrás mi procrastinación usual. No te preocupes; ya ha vuelto.

The bench now sits at the foot of my bed. It looks cute in this picture, but it is normally covered in clothes, so I don’t see much of it. It also technically isn’t finished either, because I am not sure where I put the screws for safekeeping. I am sure to find them someday, and then I will be able to reattach the seat. In the meantime, be careful where you sit.

Happy Homemaking!

¡Espero que todos tus sueños se cumplan!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. • Thanks! It is a little too small for that space at the foot of the bed, but I like having somewhere to put my clothes that I have worn, but plan to wear again before I wash them.
