You thought the Berlin Wall was in Germany, didn’t you? Well, you can also find a bit in New York. One of the things that I mentioned in my Bucket List was that I wanted to visit all of the places in the book 111 Places in New York that You Must Not Miss.

I found this book a while back, and it mentions a lot of places that I have never heard of despite the amount of time that I have spent in New York City over the course of my entire life. They always say that people often miss things in their own city that the tourists find. The first one that I sought out was the Berlin Wall, pp. 24-5.

Sofi was with me that day. It was December 30, and we had just returned from the Guggenheim Museum. The book gave us the address, and the picture showed the wall in this little park. The park was beautiful, but there was no sign of the wall.

We walked back and forth several times, before I finally read the description. In writing, the author explained that the wall had been moved indoors and was currently located inside a neighboring building. It is in the lobby and visitors are permitted to enter.

I have been to Berlin and saw pieces of the wall in their original locations, but it was still interesting to see a bit of it in my own city.

What a cool little pocket park. The tree trunks against the waterfall are like a painting. Maybe this bit of wall is what gave 45 his silly idea? 🙂
I was glad to learn about this park. It is very close to Grand Central Terminal, and I envision coming here a lot when the weather is nice it will make for a better meeting place than the station.
I have a chard of the Berlin wall encased in Lucite on my desk. It’s a weird thing to save and to many people a forgotten time. Love that there’s a tribute to the pursuit of freedom in NYC. It is very strange to think that many of my students have no idea that Germany was ever divided. It seems so long ago now, and yet still very present at the same time. I have been to several of the places listed in the book. It’s been fun tracking them down. I will post more about them.
wow! i didn’t know there was a chunk of wall in NYC either. very cool you were able to find it! i wonder if Massachusetts has a book like that.
That brand had a lot of books for different cities around the world. I don’t know if there is one for Massachusetts, but I would bet money that there is one for Boston.
