Christmas in July – Navidad en julio

The past couple of weeks have been particularly difficult. I have been lonely and missing my man. The good news is that he is scheduled to arrive in Battery Park TOMORROW! If you are in the New York City area and would like to join the welcome party, let me know and I will give you the details for us to meet up.

You might wonder why I chose the title I did. My birthday is the 25th of July. Whenever I want someone to remember the date, I tell people that it is Christmas in July. This July, however, I was able to celebrate a lot more than just my birthday. The month started off with a celebration of my Grandma Bernie. She turned 90 years old on January 07 this year, but we waited to have our family reunion until the summer when the weather would be warmer. She was joined by her four children, their three spouses, fourteen of her fifteen grandchildren and ten of their spouses, ten great-grandchildren, her two nieces and two of her great nieces for a total of forty-six family member united in her honor. We had a great time; I love this crazy family.

Amo a mi familia loca.

We drove from Frederick, MD to Long Island, NY only stopping to pick up my new car and Ironman and Spiderman. The new car is a Ford C-Max Hybrid, and I am loving it. I miss driving a stick shift, but I love the 40+ MPG.

It was fun to celebrate the Forth of July with Ironman and Spiderman. They enjoyed meeting more family members, especially their new cousin Vivie. Ponche was fascinated with her too.

We spent the Forth of July at my uncle’s house in Hampton Bays. He and his family throw one hell of a party. I was having too much fun to take many pictures.

We returned home on July 6, and Douglas left for his trip on July 8. I hope that you have been following along on his adventure. He even did a half marathon on their rest day. They have had a lot of mishaps and met a lot of wonderful people. This is a great country.

The next day, I met up with Douglas’ best friend, Mark, and his family in New York City. We had lunch on the Lobster Co. boat, which was a first for me. After lunch, walked the High Line before searching for the oldest manhole cover in NYC. It was an exciting moment. Let me know if you would like to know where it is so that you can visit it yourself.

Our niece, Taylor, arrived on July 11 to spend four days with me. I swear that Douglas’ friends and family must like me better, as they all came to visit after he left. The day she arrived we ate at the Pershing Square Restaurant across from Grand Central Terminal, and later that week, Taylor had her first taste of New York Pizza at Patsy’s in Harlem.

Taylor and I had a lot of fun together. We went paddle boarding and toured Harlem. In Harlem, we visited the Harriet Tubman monument and the Harlem Studio Museum, dedicated to the contemporary works of African-American artists.

The next day my mom, grandma and aunt came to visit, and I took them and Taylor to Stone Barns for lunch and a tour.

Everyone left on the same day, and that weekend and the following week were lonely, as I was all by myself with the animals. What would I do without them?!

The weekend of July 21-22 was my 25th high school reunion. I had not been planning to go, but as the days grew nearer, I was growing sadder that I would not be there. Finally, my friends convinced me to go. One colleague and her daughter offered to take care of Kahlua for me and another friend offered me a place to stay. I am so glad that I went. We had a blast!

As you know, my mom and friend Shae came over to celebrate my birthday with me. I also finished painting the dining room and hall that week, that I will share with you later this week.

On Friday, July 28 I had dinner with friends and played poker. It had been a long time since I had played, and Lady Luck was not with me that night. Despite losing badly at poker, I enjoyed the evening with friends.

That Sunday, my friend Janine came over to paddle board with me and eat dinner on the waterfront. It was her first visit to the Cape of Dreams, but hopefully not the last.

Espero no vuelva pronto.

Thus conclude my adventures for July. I am sad that the summer is going by so quickly. Is there any way to make it slow down?

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Are M and M ironman & spiderman? They’re adorable whoever they may be. And that is one chunky baby! Chunky babies are the best. so cute!!! love the pic of Ponche checking out the newest member of the family. Nice new car, too! And I’m glad Douglas’ journey is almost over and will be back home 🙂

    • Ack! I blew their cover. I hope that you don’t mind that I changed your comment to remove the names. I too am glad that Douglas will be home soon. The poor boys are riding through the rain today.

  2. We are Christmas in July and Bastille Day–easy to remember! 🙂
Your family seems like SO much fun! You’re very lucky! What a whirlwind of activity and visitors!
You can show me the oldest manhole cover someday when we come to NYC, OK? The Highline is on my list.
By now, Douglas is home and you are reunited. I hope he had a great trip. Yes, the summer is flying by. Let’s drag our feet and slow it down!

    • Three cheers for birthdays on holidays, even if mine is a made up holiday. I will show you anything you want when you come to visit. There are some fun sites. I’ve been dragging my feet so hard I have blisters, but it doesn’t seem to be working!

    • It’s funny that it felt as though I didn’t do much of anything that month, but when I went to write the blog post there was more to write about than I thought.
