DIY Cat Jungle Gym – Phase II

Last week I wrote about Crème’s new kitty climbing post. She was having a blast running up and down that pole, but we thought that it could be even better.

Several days after we finished wrapping the post in twine, Douglas constructed a perch for her on the top. He used a 2″ by 6″ and a couple of L brackets to hang it from the ceiling. He wrapped the part of the board closest to the pole with twine, so that Crème would have an easier time grabbing a hold of it so that she could climb up.

The new perch is in the middle of the room, but I do not think that it is unattractive. I would not want it in my living room, but down in the basement, it looks alright.

The perch is high enough that most people can walk underneath, although she has swiped at a couple of people who did.

I am sure that you are much more interested in pictures of Crème enjoying her new vantage point. Please, excuse the poor quality of the photographs. I still do not have the use of my good camera, and it is hard to take a picture of her with my instant camera. Every time I get it focused, she moves!

She loves, loves, loves to be up there.

The best part is that she has not scratched the furniture once since we put in the climbing post.

She runs up and down and back up again for long periods of time.

She also hangs out up there when we are downstairs. She will even fall asleep up there. I would have thought this would be an incredibly uncomfortable sleeping position, but if frequency is any indication, she loves it. Update: I thought she mostly used this perch while we were in the basement, but this morning I was looking for her everywhere and guess where I found her.

There is a plan to add even more on to Crème’s new jungle gym. Eventually, she will be able to cross the room via several routes without ever touching the ground.

D’Arcy from Our Bungalow’s Second Century shared this link with me. I do not think that we are ever going to go this far, but you never know. It is really cool. I am sad that they sold the house to people that took it all down. We are not going to show Crème the pictures from that house. She would pester us mercilessly to build her one. As long as she does not know about it, she will be happy with her little jungle gym.

Normally in this house we rate things with “paws up” as in “Crème gives her food two paws up.” She has even been known to give things four paws up when she really loves them, but here you can see that the paws are down. I think that in this one instance that is a favorable rating.

Here is a video of her exploring her new roost.

Happy Homemkaing!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Sorry people, some kind of tech issue with the video. If you let it “play” through once, it will automatically restart and then you should see video. Will try to correct it this evening.

  2. Haha–Crème clearly LOVES this perch! I love the pix of her hanging there like a cheetah in a tree! I knew you would enjoy the Cat’s House. It was quite famous years ago … I had a calendar one year. I don’t dare let Lacy see these pictures. Thanks for the blog link! 🙂
