DIY Fall Rake “Wreath”

Fall is here. At least, that is what they say, but I have a hard time believing it as long as the temperatures remain in the 80’s. Weather aside, this is my favorite season, and I wanted to celebrate that in my decor. I planned to make a wreath like last year, but a rake changed my mind. This is what I ended up with.

The whole idea was born while I was cleaning the garden. I went under the porch to get a bin for yard waste and found these rakes that the previous owner left behind. They are not in great condition, but I held onto them because I thought they could come in handy some day. Today is that day!

Old Rakes

I chose the metal one because it was in the best condition.

Next, I had to make some leaves. I searched through a bin of old clothes that I have been saving for scrap and found as many as I could in fall leaf colors. I would have liked to have some yellow or orange but settled for brown, green and two colors of red. This might have worked better with felt, but I used what I had.

First, I drew a leaf on a sheet of paper and cut it out.

I traced the edge on the cloth with a fabric pencil.

Cutting out all of the leaves was tedious, but I did it while watching a movie with Douglas. It was not that bad, just a couple of hours of work.

Finally, I just had to put the leaves on the rake. I considered gluing them on so that the shapes would be more recognizable, but I decided against it. Instead, I cut small slits in the leaves and slid them onto the tines. The rake looks more authentic this way.

And it looks GOR-GE-OUS on the front stoop, if I do say so myself. Happy fall to all of us!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Cute! The colors look nice next to your door. I also like your wreaths from last year, especially the one in the window with the light coming through. If we had good fall color around here, I’d try ironing leaves in waxed paper … but this has been a wet fall, and even in the best of years we don’t get color like you do!

    • I wonder when we are going to get fall here. It has been in the eighties all week. So weird! Despite this I plan to do more fall decorating this week. I hope things are going well in your kitchen. No pressure. 😉
