Last week my mother came to visit. In appreciation, I put her to work. It is a wonder that we get as many guests as we do with all of the projects that we have going on! This time we, and by we I mean she, hemmed a shower curtain. I tried to get her to use the sewing machine, but she preferred to do it by hand. Madness runs in the family.

DIY Shower Curtain

This story really begins back in April 2015. We had just finished repainting the bathroom, and the shower curtain that had been in there since before I bought the house in January 2010 had seen better days. We were making due with just the plastic lining while I searched for just the right shower curtain.

It turns out that plain white shower curtains are nearly impossible to come by and twin sized sheets are just the right width for our tub. I bought a plain white sheet and used some grommets that I had purchased years ago for another project that I never completed.

With a little help from my friend, I measured out the spacing and cut the holes.

Much to her dismay, Crème had to oversee the installation of the grommets from the window because she is not allowed outside. She was not happy about it, but the task was easy and there were no problems.

The curtain looked good, at least the top part did, but I needed to cut and hem it.

I then washed the sheet and hung it to dry. After that I folded it and stuck it in a drawer where it would wait for fifteen months before I finally admitted that I was never going to hem the shower curtain by myself and asked my mother for help. Together we measured and pinned and measured and cut and measured and pinned some more before she could hem the curtain.

There is only one picture, but the most difficult part was hanging and removing the shower curtain over and over and over again. I got really sick of this part, but since it was my only contribution to the project, I refrained from complaining.

The second hardest part was doing everything with two extra sets of paws. They only wanted to help!

Ponche even napped by our tools to make sure that he did not miss out on anything. My mother pointed out that one of his whiskers on the right side of his face (on the left when you are looking at him) curls up. I had never noticed that before, but she is right. He is such a funny looking boy.

After a final washing, the shower curtain is now hanging in the bathroom. Unfortunately, I do not have a final picture, and I cannot take one because we are in Lake Placid for the Ironman competition this weekend. You will have to settle for this shot where the curtain is pinned but not sewn.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. My mom helped me make the drapes for my living room and dining room when I first bought this house. The color scheme has changed, but I still have them in the attic. Can’t throw them out!
Good luck to Douglas in the Ironman!

  2. Very cool. I like how the top border looks darker because it’s folded over and grommetted. Very nice! nice to have help too 🙂 I know what you mean about taking shower curtains off and on – for some reason that makes my arms hurt more than anything else! love the kitties helping. good luck to douglas!

    • I never even thought about the darker top border. I didn’t even have to do any work to it since that is the top edge of the sheet! Talking about taking the curtain on and off, there is already something on it, but I am reluctant to take it down to wash it!
