Garden Update – Novedades en la huerta

When I got back from Argentina, the garden was a mess. Douglas cannot distinguish between what we planted and the weeds, so his solution was to leave it alone. He also failed to water very much, so the garden was not looking good.

Overgrown garden

It took me a couple of days, but finally I got out there to start cleaning things up. It was hot and humid, and the bugs were biting, but I refused to give up until all of the weeds were eradicated.

Weeding the garden

Remember that little bird that was screaming me earlier in the week? He sat there and watched my every move. I am starting to think that Crème hired him.

While I was working on the weeds, Douglas was trimming the hedges. We are hoping that cutting them shorter will allow them to fill out more along the bottom.

Things are not going well in the western garden bed. The tomatoes and green basil are doing well, but everything else struggled. I am going to try to plant some fall things in here.

The lot peppers and cucumbers are growing well in this bed. The melons never formed, and the squash is not growing at all.

Muchos pimientos y pepinos crecen bien aquí.

In the eastern bed, the squash was growing well, but it started to die after I weeded. I am not sure why. The potatoes are doing well, but the peas and beans are not. I am particularly disappointed with the beans because they normally do so well for us. I am going to miss our bags of frozen beans this winter.

The wild arugula is thriving. I love it and have been putting it in everything.

Something is eating all of the purple basil, but the green basil is thriving.

The tomatoes are also thriving.

Los tomates también florecen.

What do you do when you have a lot of tomatoes and basil? Pesto Time!

Happy Homemaking!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house.
