Harvesting Seeds

This year I planned to harvest seeds so that I would not have to buy as many next year. My intention was to research the best way to do this. I did watch one video on YouTube before I got bored and went outside. There are many people out there that really know what they are doing, and if you are looking for advice, you should go to them. My purpose in this post is just to let you know what I did.

I grabbed things and pulled them apart and shook them until seeds came out. It was exciting to figure out how to harvest the seeds on my own without researching. It is not really that hard. I guess my biology teachers did a good job all those years ago.

Harvesting Marigold Seeds

I went a little overboard. Harvesting seeds is fun. I started with one plant and before I knew it, I was running around my yard seeing what else I could shake or pick seeds from. There were a lot of candidates.

Some seeds were much easier to extract than others. Not many seeds make for great pictures.

Harvesting Cilantro Seeds

I am not an expert, but I do know that you need to keep the seeds in a dry, dark place. I put them in envelopes but did not seal them completely.

It is a good idea to label the envelopes before putting the seeds in. I learned that one the hard way.

It is important not to store the seeds in an air tight compartment. Let them get some air.

Harvesting Green Bean Seeds

In total, I have nine envelopes of seeds. These include sunflowers, edamame, green beans, marigolds, cilantro, columbine, zinnea and two mystery flowers.

I am excited to see if my seeds survive the winter and thrive next spring. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Do you harvest seeds?

Happy Homemaking! (or should I say Happy Harvesting!)

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I dug up a bunch of gladiola bulbs a few weeks ago and promptly forgot to take them in. They are still laying in the yard. I wonder if they are ruined? Something about your post reminded me that I put last year’s amaryllis in my closet … better go rescue it! I’m so disorganized!!!

  2. I never thought to go hunting for seeds! I’m a researcher too and isn’t it kinda fun being your own pioneer every once in a while? Can’t wait to see if your theories work come next spring!!
