House Numbers – Números para la casa

It is hard to believe that it has already been two weeks since I asked you which project I should start next for the house. They were little ones: hang some house numbers, paint the living room door or finish painting the kitchen. A number of people took the time to respond, and the numbers won. Here are the ones that we removed from the house before we had it painted.

House Numbers

The blog Design Dreams by Anne provided me with an idea for mounting the numbers. Anne used a plaque that she purchased. I did not have a plaque, nor did I want to purchase one, but I did have this old scrap of wood.

Here is my design idea. I like the idea of attaching the numbers haphazardly rather than measuring.

Douglas made me a bet that it would take me longer to remove the paint from the old numbers than it would for me to go down to the hardware store to buy some new ones. I took him up on the wager saying that it would not take me more than five minutes of work. I did not want to buy new ones unless I had to, preferring to renew, recycle, reuse.

Boiling metal to remove old paint

Boiling the numbers in baking soda allowed me to remove the old paint with minimal scraping. If you do this, make sure that you use an old pot that you are not going to use to cook food. The paint flaked off fairly easily. Douglas argued that it took a lot longer than five minutes. My defense is that I was only scraping paint for five minutes. Who do you think won?

The board I painted purple to match the front door. It took one coat of primer and two coats of paint.

Then, I painted the numbers black. I also used the primer on them before giving them a couple of layers of black.

Después pinté los números de negro. Usé la imprimación antes de pintarlos.

I am pleased with the results. Unfortunately, we have still to hang the numbers on the house. Once I had finished affixing them to the board, Douglas pointed out that I should have painted the back side of the board so that it does not rot. Oh well, maybe this weekend I will get them up.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Nice! great job with the baking soda. I didn’t know that trick. Can’t wait to see them mounted on the house! And I’m SO GLAD you got to spend some time with batman & spiderman. I have been wondering how you and they have been doing. Glad to hear you can still be in their lives!

  2. For the record she had to boil the numbers at least 3, and maybe 4, times to get the paint off and it was a process that lasted a couple of hours. She may not have had to do much physical work, but it was a lengthy process. That being said, they do look good.
