House Tour 2015

Last Wednesday, I shared the mess that was my house. What I did not tell you was that I had already cleaned the house if not immaculately well then at least as well as I needed to in order to take some pictures. I had to get it done before leaving Wednesday morning for Michigan.  I just did not have time to write the blog post before leaving, but now it is done!

Other than the plants, not much has changed in the front of the house. We did take the shutters off to repaint them. I guess this year we made the front of the house uglier! Hopefully, it will improve again soon.

When you go in the front door there are stairs up to the tenants’ apartment. Nothing has changed here, so I left the same picture from last year.

Going through the door on the right, you enter the living room. Besides moving the existing furniture around we acquired an antique bookcase and a Restoration Hardware bookcase and a new old clock. The trim in one corner was painted, plants took over one wall, and I got a new wreath.

I changed the rug that was in the hall. Other than that nothing has changed, except for the fact that this is not as nice of a picture.

Our bedroom is through the door on the left. It is mostly the same. I bought a new bedspread for summer, but I never blogged about it. I also changed the plants.

The guest bedroom saw a lot of change in the past year. First, we painted and decorated it for our exchange student. After he left, I put on a new comforter so that I could wash the one that he had used. This bedroom looks much better than it did last year, if I do say so myself.

The bathroom experienced the most work this year. We re-grouted two walls and painted the trim and walls. I never mentioned that Douglas installed hooks on the back of the bathroom door rather than re-installing the towel bar that was there. I love the look of the hooks. However, we are still not done! You can see that the walls are still bare of artwork and there is only a plastic show curtain liner – more unfinished projects.

You can return to the living room back through the hall.

In the dining room, the changes continue. We have had three different tables in this room since the last tour! The first was one that we found in the trash, the second was my great-grandmother’s table and the last was one that we bought on Craigslist. The bench also moved, and I re-upholstered the chairs.

The biggest changes in the kitchen occurred before last year’s house tour. The only differences this year are the addition of one little cabinet and some plants. I also put all of our dry goods on the wine crates on the wall. That wall looks tons better now!

The back porch looks pretty bad right now. That is on the short list of projects that we need to get to once we finally stop traveling. I am embarrassed to share these pictures, but I will do it anyway. Let’s keep it real!

The biggest change in the back yard was that the ash tree came down. Of course, you cannot tell from this picture. We also built two new raised garden beds. And the bushes gave grown tremendously.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com

  1. The house looks great. It seems to be missing a cat though. Maybe next years house tour will include one or two?

  2. I think your house looks lovely and very cosy. My favourite room has to be your bathroom with the art deco feel.

  3. Your house always looks so charming! I like the diaphanous white curtain panels. Did you also get woven blinds, or did I just notice those for the first time? Yes, where are Kahlua and Crème??

    • We have had those blinds since 2012. They were purchased with wedding gift cards. Kahlua and Crème were both hiding that day because we were packing up the car, and they knew what was coming. You cannot fool those animals!

  4. Your house is beautiful because it shows a lot of love and attention to personal detail. (Just like the rest of your lives.) It looks wonderful 🙂
