Into the Closet

What I am about to share with you has never before been published online. It has been our dirty little secret for a long time now. First of all, because it is difficult to photograph, but mostly because it is ugly. I have no excuse other than the fact that it is out of the way and not high on our list of priorities. There is not much else I can say, so I will just show you a picture of the stairway to the basement.

The hooks for the mops and brooms were already there when I moved in. As their placement was convenient, I have used them ever since to hang my cleaning implements. I do not think that it would look as bad if the walls were not:

a) an ugly color

b) dingy and streaked despite having been cleaned

c) peeling

d) all of the above

D was the correct answer if you were unsure. The only pictures of this stairway were shown in the post when we installed this cat door, but I tried not to show very much.

Inside the closet the vacuum and its attachments did not look very good either.

Ponche was so disturbed by this sight that he attacked the floor steamer.

I have had a plan to get the stairway cleaned up for a while, but it never seemed important enough to begin. Then, while I was in Oklahoma, Douglas installed this.

And cleared this out…

When I got back he waited and waited. Unfortunately, I guess I had become accustomed to narrowing my vision when going downstairs so as not to be bothered by the ugliness. I never even noticed that my mops and brooms were gone until Douglas finally asked me to go look. I cannot believe that I did not see it right away.

The closet looks much better. Ponche and Crème both made a thorough investigation and gave the job two paws up.

The stairs still need some work. We need to patch the walls, paint and put something on the stairs so that Kahlua will stop slipping on them. Add that to our long list of things to do. At least it looks better than it did with everything hanging there.

About

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Love your new organization. My mops, brooms, and steamer are all over the house and hard to locate when one is needed.(That’s why we have more than one of most things). I wanna be like you when I grow up. I hope it’s soon. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  2. If I were brave enough to do a post about our basement, you’d see a similar ugly sight. I also have a steamer and other various cleaning implements “lost” somewhere in the cellar. It’s hopeless. I hate going down there. Eric says if he needs to hide anything from me, all he has to do is take it downstairs.
Nice job on the closet organization!

    • We are leaning towards white since there is no light in this area. It needs something that will brighten it up. Also we have white paint left over from the bathroom. Bonus!
