J’Aime Mon Armoire…Organizing my Wardrobe

Ben gardırop seviyorum. Ich liebe meinen Schrank. Me encanta mi armario. I love my wardrobe.

Armoire wardrobe

So, I ended Monday’s post with armoire parts all over the house, and that is exactly what we saw when we returned home from our vacation to Montana and Yellowstone.

As you know, I do not deal well with chaos, so I promptly curled up in a ball and refused to do anything. I was having a hard time accepting that my beautiful vacation was over and that I would soon be back at work. I know you do not feel sorry for me, but I felt enough self pity to cover for you. Most of my time last week was spent snuggling my animals whom I had missed for three weeks while we were traveling.

Thankfully, Douglas did not lose his motivation, and he set right to work. There were a few pieces that needed to be fixed before we could put the armoire back together. The right hand closet had separated. Douglas had glued it before we left, so it was nice and set when we got back. I should have taken some before and after pictures, but I was too busy doing nothing but petting Kahlua and Crème.

There was a small chunk at the bottom that had broken off and had to be re-glued.

Patched wood

Could you even see where it had broken off? It is impossible to spot unless you know what to look for. Even then it is hard to detect.

My job was to wipe down the entire wardrobe with Howard Feed-N-Wax. I am not sure that the difference shows in the pictures, but the wood was dry and lusterless when we got it. A quick rub down left the armoire shining.

Douglas also had to attach one of the handles that had been broken off. He filled the hole with wood putty, so that the screw would be able to grip. It is still not a usable fix, but at least it looks better. We need to get two little tiny screws to be able to use the handle.

We also had to straighten the clothes rod. It was quite bowed when we got it, and I was afraid that it would bow again once I hung my clothes on it. Douglas was certain that it would be fine once he straightened it. You can see how that turned out.

However, Douglas is an “Ideas Man” as he likes to call himself, and he came up with an ingenious solution to this problem. He bought a piece of rebar that slipped easily inside of the copper pipe. No more swayback. That man is as intelligent as he is good-looking.

The last piece that needs fixed it the crown. There is a small separation in the corner. Douglas has not yet gotten to that job, but he assures me that it will be done soon.

In the meantime, I organized my closet. It is wonderful to have so much space. I particularly like being able to open the closet fully and view all of my hanging clothes at once. I do not understand why people install sliding doors in closets; they are so annoying!

Canvas baskets used as drawers in wardrobe

The canvas baskets on the top shelf have been with me from years. I have used them for many things, and I love them. I think I bought them at Target, but it was so many years ago that I am not quite sure. My guess is Target because that is my favorite store for these types of things. These baskets now hold sweatshirts, corduroy pants and sweaters.

Undergarments are in the closed drawers and shorts and t shirts are in the open drawers on the left side.

I also thought that the open drawers would be a good place to keep my cat.

On the top shelf I put the frame that displays my earrings and necklaces since there was no longer room for it on the wall. I am not sure if this will be the permanent place for it, but it works for now.

So far, I am loving my wardrobe. Douglas is happy with it as well, although he is still adjusting to having a mirror in front of the bed. You know I love it since I have an insane passion for mirrors.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. It’s beautiful, I love old furniture! How nice to have room for everything.
I’m making a mental note of the Howard’s product too.

  2. Such a gorgeous piece! Handy cat storage, too. Fred and Lacy are always trying to store themselves in my linen closet. Sometimes I forget Fred is in there and I close it up. Later when I walk by, it meows. I hope Douglas enjoys having his clothes in the bedroom closet … Eric isn’t so privileged! 🙂

    • It is important to find a good cat storage system. I find it helps a great deal. That silly cat is always getting locked in spaces, but she doesn’t learn her lesson!

I’m not sure that Douglas even cares if his clothes are in there. He hasn’t moved any in yet. He had better hurry before I reclaim it!
