Kayak Shed – Part III – Cobertizo – Parte III

So, to recap, we first decided where we were going to put a new shed to store our kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. Then, on Saturday, August 06, we started construction, and built the base of the shed.

The next day we set about to build the frame for the shed. We began by leveling the cement blocks that the legs will stand on and then make sure that the base was plumb as well. Douglas accomplished this by stacking boards underneath while keeping an eye on the levels that he had placed on the cross pieces.

Once we were sure that the base was positioned correctly, it was time to attach the upright support posts. I would hold them to make sure they were completely vertical, and then Douglas would screw them in. We were unable to take pictures at this point because we were both occupied. Here is what it looked like when we were done.

At this point, the neighbor kids starting hanging around and asking us a ton of questions, so we decided to put them to work. Don’t worry; we did not give them any manual labor. We only asked them to take some pictures. The five year old had trouble getting us both in frame and keeping her fingers out. The seven year old did a pretty good job. Here we are attaching the long horizontal beams for each level of the shed.

Douglas continued on after that on his own, while I worked on projects inside the house. He figured out how to hold the beams with clamps so that he could screw them in their correct positions.

After the long horizontal beams, he added the cross pieces and tested the level of the next shelf by putting the kayaks in.

The second shelf is for one of the stand-up paddle boards, as is the third. This is why we could not buy plans or a prefabricated shed. We are building this one to the exact specifications of the site and what we need to store in it.

By the time Douglas finished the last shelf, it was nighttime. We loaded all of the kayaks and paddle boards and put a tarp on the top.

Here it was the next morning. Unfortunately, we should have put bungees to keep the tarp in place. There was a driving wind later that week, and the paddle boards got wet. Fortunately, we were able to dry them out before mildew set in.

It took us another three weeks before we did any more work to the shed, but since it took me almost that long to write this post you will not have to wait that long to hear what happened next… unless of course, I don’t get around to writing the next post. Keep your fingers crossed, but don’t hold your breath.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. • I found that with the long boards I couldn’t clamp the first side in right away and then go to other end. By being clamped it wouldn’t allow me to adjust position of the other end. I had to put clamp on the post at right height and rest the one end of the board on top of the clamp. Then I would go to the other end, clamp it in place, and then come back to the first end and clamp it. The one pic above that shows a clamp you can see that it isn’t actually clamping the board, but the board is actually resting on top of it. Before screwing everything together though, I made sure both ends clamped secure so no moving.
