Kitty Climbing Post

Way back in March, a long, long time ago, I wrote about how Crème was ruining my newly upholstered chair with her little claws.

At that time I mentioned that I had a plan to make a scratching post for her. The truth is that I had come up with the idea in the summer of 2013 and had bought the materials to make the post that fall. And by that I mean that I bought a couple packages of 1/4″ twine because I already had the glue sticks and hot glue gun.

As you might have assessed from my supplies for the project, I was not planning to actually build the post. I used the pole in the basement. I started by gluing the end of the twine to the post and then wrapping it around while adding dabs of glue. I must admit that there were some burned fingers. You have to be really careful.

Crème also created a challenge by attacking the end of the string. She was really curious about the whole process.

Douglas also had to help me finish because I am so short. Having two people for this project really helps, but you could do it by yourself. In the end, it was a great success. Crème loves to run up and has even figured out how to get back down.

Since she loves her climbing post so much, Douglas is planning ways to expand it. He now wants to wrap the post on the other side of the room. Then, he is going to run a board from the one pole to the other so that she can cross the room above our heads.

On second thought, that might not be the best idea. Do you see the look in her eyes? We could be in trouble.

Update: Phase two of the Cat Jungle Gym has been completed!

Happy Homemaking!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. She’s a climber and doesn’t even need a carabiner. (Can you tell I don’t know what in the world I’m talking about?) Great project which explains the rope around the support poles in my guest house leftover from a renter with a cat. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

    • No carabiner and no harness, but she is a climber for sure! I guess you should be glad that the renter had her cat scratch the post therefore probably keeping your door trim intact.

    • Oh my gosh! That house is hysterical. I am so sad that they did not sell it to cat lovers. It is such a shame that everything was taken down. I hope my sister reads this comment and checks it out.

    • Are my nieces jealous? Do they want to come live with their aunt Jessica now so that they can have a climbing post?

By the way, in case you did not see it, you should check out the link above.

  2. oh man, so many things. first, i love your blog name-i have a cape, too and i would love to have a header like yours instead of an actual picture. but i know nothing of blog tweaking. second, i love this idea, cat people unite! and third, your sweet cat looks like mine, but with a bit longer fur. is she russian blue?
    anyway,
    enjoy!

    • I am glad you found my blog. There are few blogs out there that feature capes. I found two others, but they stopped posting. I would love to help you with the header, but the truth is that I paid someone because I am hopeless with programming. Crème is a pound cat, so we are not sure of her lineage, but she assures us that she is royalty. There are new additions coming to her post soon. Be sure to check back to see the entire setup.

    • Creme says, “Yes, I am gorgeous.” I think she means thank you. If she weren’t so loving we would be really disgusted by how vain she is. I am glad you enjoy the blog. I like yours too!
