Last day in Scotland – El último día en Escocia

Tuesday, March 29 was our last day in Scotland. The plan was to meet Taylor at the big clock in the National Museum of Scotland at 1:00 so that we could watch it go off, something that we had missed on our first trip to the museum. That meant that we were on our own for the morning. We took off from the hotel with no other plan that to start walking and stop whenever there was something that caught our attention. Our first stop was the Writer’s Museum.

Writer's Museum, Edinburgh, Scotland

It is dedicated to Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott (for whom the Scott monument was also erected) and Robert Lewis Stevenson. It is a small museum, but I appreciated learning more about these three men. The museum is free, but we left a donation.

I liked this painting of Robert Lewis Stevenson by John Singer Sargent. I had seen pictures of it before, and was pleased to view it in person. It should not be surprising that it caught my attention with all of the red.

The sidewalks throughout the plaza where the museum is located are covered in sayings by many different Scottish authors.

Our next stop was back at the Tron Church Market, where I had to buy a necklace that had caught my eye on the very first day of our trip. It is a brass outline of a human heart – the anatomical heart, not the symbolic shape. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of the necklace, but I found a similar one on Amazon. The one that I bought was nicer.

From there we went to the Museum of Childhood. It is also tiny… and free. For some reason, the only picture that I took was of this doll made out of an old shoe. There was something charming about how well-loved it appeared to be.

The majority of these museums along the Royal Mile are free. We also stopped at the Museum of Edinburgh, but I did not take any pictures there. I did take this one at the People’s Story Museum because I liked the cat curled under the stove. I would not mind having a kitchen like this one. We were disappointed because Taylor had recommended that we watch a video at the People’s Story, but it was not running the day that we went.

This is the Old Tollbooth Wynd. This was the site of one of the most dreaded prisons in Scottish history. Those of you who have read or watched Outlander might be familiar with it. I was reading Outlander while on the trip, and there were several mentions of this horrific place. It does not look that bad now.

The saying on this plate caught my eye while we were wandering the streets. It perfectly sums up the way that Douglas and I feel, especially Douglas.

Finally, it was time to meet Taylor at the clock.

Next we went back to Greyfriar’s Kirk so that I could buy a book about Greyfriar’s Bobby. Then, Taylor took us to Diagon Alley, which we had not realized was right around the corner. You Harry Potter fans should recognize that name.

We shopped for a while after that, buying some gifts. I bought Douglas a scarf in the Douglas’ plaid, since he kept mentioning that it would be nice to have one. I also bought some things with the Stewart plaid, since my great-grandmother’s family were Stewarts.

By then my feet were on fire again, and I did not want to walk any further. We stopped at a cafe, where I took a picture of this cool toilet paper holder, but even that rest was not enough for me. I was exhausted, hurting, and not feeling very well overall. Finally, I convinced Douglas to abandon me and continue on with Taylor. I went back to the hotel for a much needed nap.

Douglas and Taylor went to Blackford Hill. The views from the top are spectacular. I regret having missed it, but I was glad for my nap.

Douglas made sure to take lots of pictures so that it would be almost as though I had been there.

When they got back into town, I met up with them, and we started looking for a good place to eat dinner. Along the way, Douglas spotted this sign and decided that we could not pass up this opportunity.

Clerk's Bar, Edinburgh, Scotland

The coffee in Edinburgh is not generally that good – at least that is what Taylor and Douglas told me, but Clerk’s Bar had a decent cup of coffee. It was the first cup that I had on our trip, because other than that free one I stuck to the tea – which was excellent.

We ended the night at Dagda Bar, where we participated in a game of Pub Trivia. Douglas, Taylor and I all love trivia, but our team did not do very well. It did not help that four out of the five of us on our team were from North America and could not answer many of the British trivia questions. (We were playing with two of Taylor’s friends, one of which was from Canada.) We won the chocolate that was reserved for the team that finished second to last. I would have been happy with that, but we did not receive the prize because the trivia master forgot to bring it. I did not take any pictures of trivia night.

No tomé ninguna foto esa noche.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I was hoping you were going to say you stopped in a shoe shop and bought a wonderful, comfy pair of walking shoes! Or at least a pair of cushioned insoles. I hope you have some by now.
I love the look of these old stone buildings. I have a feeling I’m going to feel right at home in Scotland, even though I’m not a Scot.

    • We did buy her a pair of insoles previous evening which helped some, but unfortunately they were a cheap pair (all we could find) and they started deteriorating very quickly. Plus her feet were already so sore, would have been limited effect anyway.
      🙁

    • The problem was that I discovered what would be the solution on a national bank holiday. We found one store open that sold insoles and they were shredded by the end of the first 24 hours. 🙁 I still enjoyed my trip, and I did feel at home there. Then again, I do have Scottish heritage.

  2. i’m glad you took care of yourself and took the nap/rest. i’m sure it helped you enjoy the rest of that day/night! your poor feet! beautiful pictures. love the purple lighted tree. and the quotes on the street stones. and the plate is perfect! you might need to DIY something similar 🙂

    • It is important to admit when you need a break. I would have been a cranky b—h if I had tried to keep going that day. I think we all enjoyed the day a lot more because I let them know that I needed a nap.
