May I? – ¿Puedo?

My goal for May was to finish the school year strong. It was hard to catch up after missing nearly two weeks of classes for my trip to Argentina. I was working on an interactive project between the school I visited in Buenos Aires and my school. It ended up being a huge success. I also started riding my bike home from school every day. That is the benefit to working with my husband. I drive to school and ride home, and he rides or runs to school and drives home. Douglas rides on the roads, but I prefer the bike path. I am only on the roads for the last mile or so. In total it is about a nine-mile ride and takes me an hour give or take a few minutes.

On May 5, we received a call from social services informing us that the two boys that they had asked us to take in April had been found. Their mother was in an accident on Long Island with the boys in the car, and they were taken into custody. Luckily, they were unhurt, and we agreed to take them. At 1:00 a.m. they arrived with the younger of the two boys. His brother had to be taken directly to a 24-hour-care facility. In the end, S was only with us for three days before they took him to the same group home. It was sad to witness the amount of trauma that he had sustained in his seven years on Earth. He could be a sweet little boy, but he had the worst language that I have ever heard in my life. He threatened us with knives and tried to run away several times. We decided that we were not able to give him the care that he needed. It is going to be a while before he can live with a family.

On May 9, we received the best news ever. My brother and sister-in-law became parents to an adorable baby girl, Vivienne Amelia. I was so happy for them.

They also helped me in the garden on Sunday… for a short time. The boys quickly lost interest and wanted to go play with their friends.

I returned to the New York Botanical Garden in May 20 to catch up with my friend Janine. Our parents were friends before we were born, so we have been friends since birth. Having moved as much as I have in my life, it means a lot to me to have had a friend that I have known that long. We had a nice visit.

Back in January, I bought tickets to a Billy Joel concert while getting an oil change. I could not find a pen to write the date down and thought that I would do it when I got home. I then promptly forgot all about the tickets. Then, I received an email one Wednesday in May that my tickets for the next day were available to print. It was fortunate that Douglas and I were available to go to the concert. It was supposed to be a surprise for him and ended up a surprise for us both!

Finally, I flew out to St. Louis over Memorial Day weekend to visit Laura, Jeremy and Vivie. My mom was also there. I fell in love with that baby! She is adorable and well behaved.

So, there you have our adventures for May. I cannot believe that it is already July. This year is flying by. Here another funny baby pic because we just can’t get enough of those, no?

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com

  1. that’s awesome that your interactive school program was/is such a success – congrats!
very cool about being able to ride your bike home. i’d love to do that but it’s about 15 miles each way if i avoid the highway & 30 miles roundtrip isn’t feasable… VERY cool you have a bike path you can take!
sorry to hear about your experience with that poor boy and the knife… i hope he gets the help he needs.
glad you were able to see superman and ironman again!
vivienne is adorable – i have seen the pics on facebook – so cute! wonderful 🙂

    • It was a good month. We also hope that poor boy will get help and be able to live with a family one day. We would be willing to take him back.

  2. How wonderful to have that bike path! I haven’t been on my bike for 2 years … need some repairs done. I’m determined to get out this summer!
How adorable that Ponche curled up with that troubled little boy!
Billy Joel is on my bucket list–lucky you!
Congrats on being an auntie! You look very happy. And that green top is a great color on you! 🙂

    • All of the animals have been very good with all the children that we have introduced them to. You should get those repairs done and get back on the bike! It feels so good to ride.

  3. You and Douglas are the lights in the dark lives of children who have little hope. It’s heartbreaking to read; it must be even more so to live. Thank you for taking care of these lost children.
I’m enjoying following Douglas’ biking adventure. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music
