Museo Histórico Sarmiento

I spent the 4th of July in Argentina this year, and it was not a holiday at all. School was in session, but there was a field trip planned to a nearby museum, el Museo Histórico Sarmiento, which is located in the main plaza of the Belgrano neighborhood, or Plaza Manuel Belgrano. We were able to walk there from the school.

Pasé el cuatro de julio en Argentina este año y no fue un día festivo de ninguna manera. Había clases, pero yo acompañé a un grupo de alumnos en un viaje a un museo local, el Museo Histórico Sarmiento, que está en la plaza central del vecindario Belgrano o la Plaza Manuel Belgrano. Pudimos ir caminando del colegio.

There were many likenesses of Sarmiento around. It was hard to capture the painting in pictures. I really liked the bust carved out of a huge tree trunk.

Había muchas imágenes de Sarmiento, pero fue difícil sacar una buena foto de las pinturas sin el reflejo de las luces. Me encantaba el busto esculpido de un tronco de árbol enorme.

You heard about Domingo Faustino Sarmiento when Sofi and I visited the Recoleta Cemetery, because his was the first tomb we saw. He is a famous Argentine author, who was elected seventh president of Argentina in 1868.

Habías escuchado de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento cuando Sofi y yo visitamos el cementerio de la Recoleta, porque la suya fue la primera tumba que vimos. Es un autor argentino famoso quien fue elegido el séptimo presidente de Argentina en 1868.

I loved the museum for all of the antiques that came from his house. I wanted to take them all home. This set had lovely carved deer heads on the top of all the pieces. My pictures did not turn out well, but you can get the idea. Have you ever seen anything like it? I want carved kitties at the top of my furniture.

Me gustó mucho el museo por las antigüedades. Quería llevarlas todas a casa de una vez. Este juego tenía unas cabezas de ciervos talladas en la parte superior de cada pieza. La foto no me salió bien, pero puedes tener una idea de cómo se veía. ¿Habías visto algo semejante? Quiero un juego con gatitos esculpidos para mi casa.

This is the chair that Sarmiento died in. It looks much more comfortable than a modern-day wheelchair, even if it is more unwieldy.

Este es el sillón donde se murió Sarmiento. Se ve mucho más cómodo que una silla de ruedas moderna, aun si es más difícil de manejar.

That evening several of the teachers took me out to a milongo, or an informal tango dance. The place where it was to be held was a cool place. Unfortunately, it was cold in the building and we waited for almost an hour for the food that we ordered before giving up.

Esa noche salí con un grupo de profesoras del colegio, quienes me llevaron a un milongo, o baile informal de tango. El local fue interesante, pero desafortunadamente, hacía mucho frío adentro y esperamos una hora por la comida que habíamos pedido antes de desesperarnos y salir antes de que comenzara el baile.

We went to an old bar/restaurant to get some food instead. A good time was had by all despite the fact that we did not get to dance. Hopefully, next time I will get to try to tango in Buenos Aires.

Fuimos a un bar/restaurante antiguo y cenamos rico. La pasamos bien a pesar de no poder bailar. Espero tener la oportunidad de bailar tango la próxima vez que me encuentro en Buenos Aires.
