Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes – Buenos Aires

Tuesday, July 05 was my last full day in Buenos Aires. I would leave after school the next day to travel to Mendoza, a trip that I will talk about in the next two weeks in my last two posts about my 2016 trip to Argentina. For my last evening, Sofi and I decided to go to the National Museum of Fine Arts, since our first attempt had been thwarted.

National Museum of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires

I love museums, and could have spent hours there, but we were limited and the security guards actually kicked us out an hour before the posted closing time. There were several works by people that I had never heard of. This are some of my favorites.

There were other works by artists that I recognized  immediately, like Rodin.

This room was cool. Everything in it came from a private collection.

There were pictures on the wall showing what the room looked like in the mansion that the artwork came from. I would love to have a room like this in my home.

There was also an exhibit of the artwork of the great Mexican muralists: Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siquieros and José Clemente Orozco. It was particularly significant for me since I had just returned from a trip to Mexico where I visited the Blue House where Diego Rivera lived with Frida Kahlo. Although these three are known for their murals, the works in this museum were mostly portraits. Here is one by Diego Rivera.

This painting of a nude woman by Siqueiros would go well in my collection if only I could afford it.

These two portraits are by Clemente Orozco.

Estos dos retratos son de Clemente Orozco.

Clemente Orozco also did this portrait of Siqueiros.

We did not get as much time as we would like to explore the interactive exhibits. We were in that room when the security guard announced that the museum was closing and chased us out.

You can experience them better in the videos.

Outside the museum we happened upon this park that Sofi had never seen before. In fact, it was just being completed and was not yet open to the public. I hope to be able to return in the day sometime. It reminds me of something by M.C. Escher. What do you think?

Escher. ¿Qué piensas tú?

This statue of José de San Martín was across from the bus stop.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. You can read about my projects on my blog www.CapeofDreams.com

  1. i am amazed at that room full of works from the personal collection – thanks for including the pics of what the room at the mansion looks like when all their artworks are home. incredible!

    • That was the most amazing room for me. It was so beautiful, and I immediately thought that I would love to live there. It blew me away when I discovered that somebody actually did. They had lots of paintings of cats too. I should have taken some pictures of those, but I would have felt silly taking pictures of everything.

  2. I’m attracted to that last painting of the opal ladies. The interactive displays looked like fun, too. I can also take hours in a museum … I know what you mean!

    • That one was stunning. I just had to take a picture. I prefer to go to museums alone because I like to wander at my own pace. Sofi was a good companion because we both wandered independently, but were able to find each other to point things out or make comments.
