Still Not Finished Mulching

This weekend, I carried on in the garden. Douglas was busy and not able to help me as he would have liked. At least, that is what he said. I think that his excuses were awfully convenient. As you know, our vegetable garden was looking terrible. We neglected it at the end of last summer because we were traveling, and then I never cleaned it before winter arrived. I am a bad gardener.

The good news is that the neighbors had their wall rebuilt, and it looks a lot better.

I do wish that they would clean up this debris.

Besides the mess on the side of the shed, their workers killed a couple of our bushes, but I am willing to sacrifice them to have a better view than their old crumbling wall.

Actually all of the bushes at the side of our property suffered a great deal through the harsh winter snows and were not looking that good, even before some were crushed by the masons. Privet is hardy, and I am sure that they will bounce back. In the meantime, some mulch should make them look better.

My first project was to clean out the vegetable garden. After I finished pulling out all of the dead weeds, Douglas mixed some peat into the soil. We hope that this will help the moisture in this summer. Whether this works or not, it does look much better, no?

Next, I moved on to the bushes. I started by weeding and then  started adding mulch. I continued until my back insisted that I stop. I tried to soldier on, but it was very determined that I not continue. Therefore, the rest will have to be done next weekend.

Things might not be finished in the back yard, but whenever I need beauty I just have to go out front. The tulips are starting to bloom, and they are stunning.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Great job, and your tulips are lovely. Now, Humph would love all fresh earth….you can guess what he’d want it for, the dirty boy.

    • Our neighborhood cats stay out of my garden. I am not sure why, but perhaps because they can smell Kahlua around the yard. Whatever the reason, I’m glad!!!

    • I am determined to be a better gardener this year! So far things are going marvelously in the front yard. Now if the back yard would just shape up…
