Summer Shenanigans – Travesuras de verano

This has been a busy summer for sure. We have not accomplished much on our to-do list, but we have been having a lot of fun. Shortly after I returned from Argentina, we went on our annual trip to Lake Placid, New York for Douglas to compete in the Ironman. A full arch of rainbow seemed like an auspicious omen a couple of days before the race.

On Friday night we played mini golf. Douglas beat me. I was not happy.

Last year we tried out the stand up paddle boards (SUPs) on my birthday the day before the race. This year we did it again, although it was not my birthday this time. We took the boards out for a lot longer this time. We rented them for four hours, but a thunderstorm required us to return them after about three hours and fifteen minutes.

I tried some SUP yoga. Chair pose looked pretty good, but tree pose ended with me in the water.

This loon kept us company for a while. I think that he was laughing at my yoga attempts.

Douglas’ race went well. He was about an hour off of his best time at twelve hours and seventeen minutes, but he was twenty minutes faster than last year.

The day after the race, on my birthday, we drove five hours to western New York to go camping with friends at Letchworth State Park.

Neither of us had ever been to the park and found it amazingly beautiful. Here are the Lower, Middle and Upper Falls. We did a couple of hikes, but there is still a lot for us to explore in future visits to the park.

The last time that we were all together was two years ago when Douglas Junior did the Ironman with Douglas Senior. These two little munchkins had not seen us since then, and they were a little shy when we first arrived. By the next morning, I was pretty confident that they were not scared of me any more when they piled on top of me in the hammock. We had a great time with them; they are great kids.

At one point we had to go back to their house for a few hours, so we took advantage of the pool and the underwater camera to take some fun pictures.

Another big event of the summer was that Menderes came back to visit for almost a month. He was here for twenty five days before leaving yesterday. We were able to meet his girlfriend as well. We approved.

Last Monday we went kayaking on the Hudson River with Menderes and a couple of his friends. We had a nice paddle.

That Wednesday, our stand up paddle boards arrived. Last year we debated about buying SUPs, but we decided against it. This year we went ahead. Of course, that afternoon after our paddle we discovered one of the reasons that we should not have purchased them. We could not fit them in our shed, and we could not get them in the basement. Come back later this week to find out what our solution was.

In addition to Menderes, we have been doing a lot of entertaining. A former colleague came back into town last Tuesday, and so a few of us got together to catch up.

On Thursday, my best friend from graduate school visited with her husband from Lancaster, PA. It was the first time that we had seen each other since my wedding and the first time that we met her husband. We approved of him.

On Friday, Douglas’ youngest sister and her husband came from Toledo, OH for dinner. Well, actually they came for a wedding, and they spent the eve of the wedding with us.

This week Douglas is going camping with Alex, the boy that lived with us for a couple of months two years ago. Then we have two weddings this weekend. The Friday wedding is in Vermont and the Saturday wedding is on Long Island. Then, I will be staying on Long Island for the week with my family while Douglas takes a group of students to Lake Placid to hike Mt. Marcy. It has been a busy summer, and it is not over yet. I hope you are enjoying it as well.

Happy Travels!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. You and Douglas really know how to pack a lot into summer! Congrats to Douglas on his Ironman (holy cow, 12+ hours!) and belated happy birthday to you! Those SUPs must be huge, but they do look like fun. I hope you have a few more weeks of shenanigans before you have to go back to school.
