Sunflowers Make Me Happy

You may have noticed that my blog changed. This is because I was checking out new themes and accidentally hit the “Activate” button. Actually, I do not think that I hit that button at all, but my husband assures me that this is the only way that it could have happened. He said this after rushing in thinking that a disaster had occurred, alerted by my wails. I was rather distraught at having erased a good deal of my work. He seemed rather annoyed that I was crying over something so ridiculous, but being the good man that he is, helped me to get my widgets back. (Widgets are the buttons you see in the right-hand column.)

You might ask why I did not just change it back. Well, there is not an “Undo” button on WordPress, much to my dismay. Therefore, in order to return things to the way they had been, I would have to recreate it. I did not want to spend the time or energy, besides I do not hate the way things look now. As you know if you have been been following this blog, I am not afraid of change. I embrace change, and thus accepted the new look.

Also, I have been talking with Stacey over at A Goode House about making the switch from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, so there is no sense in trying to recapture the old design. If you do not know what that means, do not worry about it. All you need to know for the purpose of following this blog is that an even bigger change is coming. Stacey is going to help me revolutionize this site into the most amazing one you have ever seen. With the exception of hers, of course. 😉

Sunflowers

In the meantime, to forget the ugliness of the unexpected blog change and embrace the positive transformation that is to come, here are some sunflowers. I do not know what it is about this flower that makes me so happy, but a sunflower never fails to bring a smile to my face.

They represent the sun, that glorious globe in the sky that has been shining so brightly this summer.

They bring the bees. I know that many people are scared of bees, but I try to do everything possible to attract them to my yard. Bees are having a hard time in the world these days, and I want to do all that I can to help them. A world without bees would not be a world worth living in I am afraid, since they pollinate many of the plants I love. Thankfully, the bees love sunflowers as much as I do. They were literally swarming these flowers.

Unfortunately, the squirrels love the sunflowers as well. They have been munching some of the sunflowers and have brought several to the ground. I only hope that we will be able to harvest some of the seeds and that the rats with fluffy tails will not get them all. Douglas has declared war on these rodents. It is hilarious to watch him race from the house screaming when he spots a squirrel mounted on a sunflower.

Much of my garden did not do well this summer. This is due to the neglect it suffered while Douglas and I traveled for over a month. Luckily, sunflowers are hardy specimens, and they are thriving.

The Cape of Dreams looks good clothed in sunflowers, don’t you think?

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. GORGEOUS pictures! I have always wanted to plant sunflowers but worried about the squirrels enjoying them way more than me. I have to say that seeing yours makes me want to try next year. A friend of mine plants these for a living and his farm has fields and fields of them. It’s so beautiful. Makes me want to run though them. HA HA! Looking forward to working with you on the site. Thanks, Jessica!

    • Go for it! Last year I planted a couple in the back, and the squirrels got all of them. This year, I planted a lot everywhere. There are only a couple surviving in the back, but these are right by the road, so I think that squirrels are a little more intimidated. I love them!

  2. I love sunflowers too. And bees… so happy to find bees looking healthy and busy in my yard. Glad you’re enjoying them in your yard too. Your sunflower pictures are lovely (yes, they make me smile too…), and your resilience in the face of wordpress theme loss is astounding. (= At least you can do for real yellow smiley faces, that match your sunflowers. I don’t own the smiley faces yet.
