The Walls are Falling in on Us – Se caen las paredes encima de nosotros

OK. I might have exaggerated that title a bit, but the walls do have huge cracks running down them. I was hoping to give you the annual tour of the house today, but that is going to have to wait. We are in crisis mode.

Cracks in drywall resulting from insulation gone bad

It all started on Monday, when the company, Bright Home Energy Solutions, that we had contracted to insulate our house arrived. They insulated the basement and attic no problem.

Then, they started to remove the tiles outside to blow insulation into the walls, and the asbestos tiles started to crack. We decided that we would forgo the insulation of the southern, eastern and northern walls of the house which are clad in the asbestos tiles and only insulate the western wall, which is on the front of the house and is covered in wood shingles.

It all seemed to go well. When they finished the job yesterday afternoon, everything looked fine. Douglas and I left shortly after they did. When we returned home, it was obvious that everything was no longer well. The drywall on the western walls of the living room and the bedroom has been blown out. It is hard to tell from the pictures, but those are not just cracks, the drywall is bowing out on those walls.

So, now in addition to all the work I had planned to do today, I am home fielding calls from Bright Home and hoping that they can get someone out here as soon as possible to fix the walls. Arg! This is not what I wanted to be doing today!!!!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. OMG!!! i have never heard of that happening – holy crap!!! i hope they get there and get it fixed fast, with minimal disruption to you and the pets 🙁 that wicked totally sucks!!!

    • I thought that they should have at least told us that it was a possibility, as one of the workers told us a couple of nightmare stories after they had finished when we still thought that our job had gone well. I am just glad that we didn’t do the whole house as we had originally planned. If this had happened in the dining room where I had just painted, I would have cried.

  2. Holy crap –that’s awful! Like they overstuffed the cavity and it busted out on the inside! I’m glad you didn’t get too much further with painting. Good luck! !

    • We have since learned that there have been times that the drywall explodes, which would have be a lot worse. This might give me the impetus that I need to paint the living room!

  3. Well, that is truly painful! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you and thinking good thoughts for a fast solution, too.

  4. Well you obviously did the right thing by procrastinating on the painting! All the images appear to be in your living room – did this affect any walls that weren’t being painted anyway?

    • Living room and bedroom, so we will have to repaint in the bedroom. I am just thanking my lucky stars that it is only those two rooms. Can you imagine if we had had them insulate the whole house?!

  5. What a disaster! Your title is not an exaggeration to me. Dry wall repair is the messiest, dustiest disruption there is. Hope they fix it completely and after it’s done to your satisfaction write a big post on how it might have been avoided with the right information beforehand. I’m with your other commenters: I would be freaking out!!!! Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

    • I thought that my public blog post would motivate them to be more helpful to us, but so far that has not been the case. Supposedly somebody is coming out tomorrow to fix it. I am worried that they are not planning to do it properly.

  6. Oh, no! I was afraid it was on the walls that you had just painted. But, I read in the ocmments it wasn’t the case. Still, it’s the kind of thing everybody hates to happen. I hope the company fixes everything as soon as possible. Is it possible that they are guilty by using too much power to blow the insulation?

    • They are definitely guilty, but I am not sure if it was using too much power or blowing in too much. I don’t know if we will ever know exactly why it happened.

  7. Jessica, I can’t find your House Tour 2017 post. I got the email yesterday around 6 pm but the link doesn’t work. Because of the drywall problem, I wonder if this was a real post?

    • It is a real post, but it accidentally got posted before it was finished or really even written at all. It will be published shortly. Sorry about that!
