Tromsø & Dog Sledding – Trineo de perros en Tromsø

On Monday, March 20 Douglas and I explored Tromsø. This cute little town exists on an island within the Arctic Circle, and boasts a lot of records, such as the world’s northernmost church, university, museums, etc. Despite the cold, there was a naked man standing outside our hotel. I checked – there was not much shrinkage. He’s tougher than Douglas even.

Our first stop was the Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum or the North Norwegian Art Museum dedicated to the art of the Sami, indigenous people.

Every building we entered provided lockers for visitors to stash their spikes and outdoor gear. Sidewalks and streets are plowed but not fully cleared of snow so spikes for your boots are common. While we did not have spikes, we appreciated the lockers so that we did not have to lug around our coats, hats, mittens and other winter paraphernalia. Then, we were truly able to appreciate the art.

These small paintings by Markku Laakso were my favorites. There were some interesting themes; all of the paintings were beautiful little snippets of life.

I also fell in love with the pencil drawing of this dog by artist Hanne Grieg Hermansen. It looked like a photograph, but was pencil on paper adhered to aluminum. I wanted to take it home.

Quería llevarlo a casa.

From the museum we walked up to the Kirkeparken, church park, in from of the Tromsø Domkirke, or cathedral, the only wooden cathedral in Norway.

These gray and black birds caught my eye. Aren’t they handsome? Do you know what kind of birds they are? We guessed that they are related to crows, but we had never seen them before.

Even though the day was overcast, we were not uncomfortable walking around. Since we were appropriately dressed, it was not as cold as I thought it would be. The Gulf Stream that runs along Norway’s coast keeps things from getting as cold as it is further inland. We were at the same latitude as Siberia but were much more comfortable than we would have been there!

We went inside to take a break and look around. There are a lot of sculptures in the library, as there are everywhere in Norway.

I was sad that I could not read any of the books, but on my way out I noticed this one. It seemed serendipitous that I should encounter it so soon after questioning what kind of birds we had seen in the park. It turned out that they are Kråke, and we were right in thinking that they were related to crows. A combination of my English, Spanish and German helped me figure that out from the book written in Norwegian.

For lunch, we had a reservation in Emmas Drømmekjøkken, Emma’s Dream Kitchen. We both passed on the whale, a delicacy for the Norwegians, who are fighting to have whaling bans lifted. Douglas had reindeer while I ate fish. While I do not eat fish at home, I felt that I should try some while in Norway, since that is their main staple.

With sated appetites we walked down Strandvegen St. to Polaria, a museum and aquarium. There we learned about Northern Norway and the receding polar cap and appreciated the fish.

We also visited the seals. I thought that their tank needed to be cleaned. The aquarium was nice, but it does not compare to the one in Riverhead, NY where we went with Spiderman and Ironman, shortly after returning home.

Back at our hotel, we prepared for our dog sledding excursion that evening. I had scheduled our dog sledding for evening, so that we could see the northern lights while we were out there, but the view from our hotel room looked bleak. The sky remained overcast, and we kept hoping for that to change.

I took a lot of pictures from the bus on our 90 minute trip to Lyngsfjord’s Camp Tamok in Øverbygd, Norway.

On the way to the camp we passed a reindeer farm, and on the way back both Douglas and I saw a fox run into the brush in front of the bus. Unfortunately, I did not get evidence of either of those events.

At the camp, we got dressed in our warm clothing. Both Douglas and I were prepared, since we spend a lot of time outside in the winter, but those that did not have their own outerwear were given snowsuits, boots and gloves. I did borrow boots since my feet had been a little cold the night before, and I wanted to be able to wear another pair of socks and still have room in the boots for the air to circulate, which actually keeps your feet warmer. Once we were properly dressed, we headed over to the dogs, where our team was raring to go.

The sledding started out slowly because the other couple that we were with had a lot of difficulty. The man was driving, but he refused to push the sled up the hills or use the brake on the way down. That meant that we had to stop to put an extra dog on his sled when we came to a hill and then stop on the top to take a couple off. We also stopped a couple of times because his wife was complaining that she was cold and that her reindeer furs were slipping off. I had not asked for furs or a snowsuit, but I wasn’t cold. Finally, the guide made the husband sit in his sled and had their son drive the second sled. Then, we were on our way.

Here is a short video of the experience. I am driving.

Conduzco yo.

I was able to drive on the way back to camp, and it was a blast! Our dogs were the best, and I felt badly for them that I had to use the brake so much because we were going faster than the sleds in front of us. Every time I put my foot on the brake, the dogs would look back as if to ask, “Why the hell are you doing that?” Finally, I learned that I could stop them for a long time to give the sleds in front a head start, and then we could run for a while. I loved driving.

¡Me encantó!

Back in camp, we ate dinner in a traditional Sami tent, as we had the night before. Dinner was reindeer soup followed by lefse for dessert. Lefse is a traditional Norwegian flatbread, and it is served folded with cheese and cinnamon inside for dessert. We were disappointed that we had not been able to see the Northern Lights while dog sledding. The skies had cleared a bit, and immediately after eating, Douglas went outside to make sure that we would not miss them, but they never appeared.

Overall, we enjoyed our dog sledding experience and highly recommend Lyngsfjord’s Tamok Camp. The best part was being allowed to drive the sled ourselves. Hopefully, we will get another opportunity someday. Maybe I will sign up for the Iditarod!

  1. I don’t think I know anyone else who has gone dogsledding. It does look like it would be a blast, especially at night. I like the Laakso paintings, too. The one of the woman wearing a headlamp (partially visible) reminds me of me painting my coffered ceiling. 🙂

    • A good friend of mine used to do it, but I never got the chance to go with her. I am glad I was finally able to go. Maybe you appeared to Laakso in a dream and he based that one on you!
