Wedding DIY – Personalized Hershey Kisses

I love kisses…chocolate and other.

Personalized Hershey kisses

Last week my husband asked me when I was going to put the projects that I did for the wedding on my blog. We had a beautiful wedding in June 2012. Here we are in the church.

Wedding

Today, I received the pictures from the photographer, so I guess it is a good time to write a post about them. (I highly recommend our photographers, by the way. You can find them at Lighthouse Photography.) I know that it is not technically a house project, but weddings are part of making a home. My home just would not be the same without my husband. He is peering over my shoulder and says, “Damn right!” Here is my handsome man on our wedding day.

Groom

One of the first projects I did was inspired by an Oriental Trading Company catalog that was sent to me because I registered with the Knot. (By the way, I did not add a link because I do not recommend registering with theknot.com. I did not particularly like it, and I received a great deal of junk mail because of it.) However, the catalog had Hershey Kisses that you could buy for 40 cents a piece with a personalized sticker on the bottom. I could not find the kisses on their website, but here are the stickers. Oriental Trading I really liked the idea, but I thought that the price was extremely high. I decided to make them myself. I had visions of this.

Personalized Hershey kisses

First, I had to do some research to find out how big Hershey kisses are. For your information, they are .75″. Then, I had to find stickers that size. I found them here World Label. The smallest number of sheets you can order are 100. That amount cost me $18.95. At Amazon, you can buy more for less. (This is an affiliate link, so you will not pay more, but I could earn a small percentage.) The best part was that instead of one personalized sticker, I was able to make as many different ones as I wanted. The sheets have 12 rows of 9, so I made 12 different kinds of stickers, one row of each. I had some with words and others with pictures. Here is a photo of one of the sheets of stickers.

Homemade Hershey kiss labels

Our nephews particularly liked the sticker with the shot of us kissing. “A kiss on a kiss,” Carter chanted. They also made sure to collect one of each kind of sticker. It was really cute.

After I had the stickers ready, I bought the chocolate. It was cheapest per piece to buy a 25 pound box. I bought the Hershey Kisses from The Hershey Store for about $120 including tax and shipping. If you don’t need that many you can buy from Amazon. When it arrived, the box was too heavy for me, so I asked Douglas to pick it up. I did not tell him what was in the box, and he thought that it was something fragile because he could hear the Styrofoam that it was packed in. That meant that he carried it very gingerly down a steep hill for about 3/8 of a mile. He was not very happy when he found out what it was!

The most time consuming part was putting the stickers on the chocolate. Luckily, I had good friends and family to help me. Douglas thought that we should wait until the nieces and nephews arrived and enlist them to help. I was sure that there would not be enough chocolate left if we did that! My mother and grandmother came to visit one weekend, so they started the process. Then, I bribed my girlfriends Rebecca and Diane with wine to finish the job. We had a lot of fun chatting, sipping wine and putting on stickers. Unfortunately, I printed about two sheets of labels too few, so we ran out of stickers before the job was done. My sister and sister-in-law helped me finish the job. Here are some shots of the finished product.

Overall, the personalized Hershey Kisses were a big hit. We sprinkled them around the rehearsal dinner and the wedding reception. We put them on the piano, around the guestbook and on the tables.

It is estimated that there are 2,000 Kisses in a 25 lb. box. If you do the math, I paid about seven cents a Kiss rather than the forty cents that Oriental Trading Company was asking. That is a lot more chocolate for my buck. If anyone would like to do this themselves, let me know. I still have a lot of sheets of .75″ round label stickers.

Update: I gave away the last of the sheets of stickers, but I still have the label template if you would like to use it, please contact me.

Happy Homemaking!

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Awesome idea!!!!! it looks great!!!! You would be willing sell me some of your leftover sticker sheets? I would like to do this but do not want to buy 100 sheets. Thank you!

        • Hi Faith, I did get your response. I did not put in on the site in case you wanted your email to be private. Sorry that I did not respond to you sooner. I looked for the sheets quickly last night, but I did not find them. I know that there are in the house. I will get home very late tonight, but tomorrow after work, I am determined to find them, and when I do, I will send you some. I will get in touch with you soon.

        • I just sent you an email. I found the stickers and have 15 sheets in an envelope to send out to you on Monday or whenever I get your email. If you don’t receive my email, let me know.

There is no charge for the stickers. Maybe you can follow my blog and give me feedback from time to time because that is what I would appreciate more than money.

I hope that the stickers work out for you.

  2. Hi Jessica! Do you still have more sticker sheets? (I know you already gave some away, and I don’t know how many spare you had.) I’d love to get 12 sheets if you do…

  3. I absolutely love your idea of doing this yourself! It would save me lots of money, could you send me the templates for this? It would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! Yours turned out great!

  4. I love this idea and have been searching for a great template to use to make these for my son’s wedding this Friday! Would you please email me the template? Did you use Avery 5048 stickers? Thank you!

  5. Hello.
I just brought Avery labels for my wedding. The code number is 5408 but there are 24 per sheet (4 across, 6 down). I would like to make my own designs in GIMP but I do not understand how to create the size of the circle. What application did you use?

    Thanks.

    • I actually used Microsoft Word and the template that came with the stickers I purchased. I just sent you an email with my template so that you can compare or adjust it to make it work with your labels. I hope this helps!
