What Do You Think? – ¿Qué piensas tú?

Last week, I posted about our dining room light fixture and asked for your opinion on what we should do. My friend, Jo, pointed out that it was hard to opine without better pictures so here they are for you. First, here is a look at the dining room as it looked with the original light fixture.

The Dining Room 2016

Here is the living room with the matching lamp. It is important to consider that both light fixtures are visible from most place in both the dining and living rooms.

Living Room October 2014

This is what the current light looks like in dining room. One of my concerns is that it is too busy because I have a lot of patterns and objects in the dining and living rooms. Of course, why worry about that now!

Dining room with new light fixture

It is currently too high. I would have it rewired and have the chain lengthened were we to keep it here in the dining room. Douglas does not agree with that. He likes it high because he is always hitting his head on everything.

Here is a view of the kitchen currently. There is a cheap white fan in there. I like having a fan in there, but Douglas does most of the cooking, and he does not like it.

Kitchen

I think that my grandmother’s lamp would look good in here because of the green, but the other one goes well with green. It might be nice to have the busier lamp in here where there are fewer patterns to compete with it, but it might be too big.

Kitchen

So, there you have more pictures, and all of the things that need to be taken into consideration. Here are you options. Should we….

A) put my grandmother’s lamp back in the dining room and leave the fan in the kitchen.

B) put my grandmother’s lamp back in the dining room and put the new light fixture in the kitchen.

C) leave the new fixture in the dining room and put my grandmother’s fan in the kitchen.

New light fixture in dining room

Not having my grandmother’s light anywhere is not an option. It means to much to me to let go of. Thank you so much in advance for your thoughts.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. I like your grandmother’s light fixture best in the dining room. The flower petals and simplicity of the design look nice with your table.

I think some more colorful floral one would look nice in the kitchen or guest room.

Personally I couldn’t do without a fan in the kitchen. I have one on top of the refrigerator that Twirls so not the same as a ceiling fan but very helpful.

    • That is the way that I am leaning too. It would be a definite yes were that light fixture not so big for the kitchen, but maybe that doesn’t matter. We really do not use the fan in there very much.

  2. Comment from the road:
Ceiling fan messes up gas flame so I don’t use it. I’ve also almost took off my hand many times reaching for things above cabinet forgetting it was on

  3. I vote for B. I like grandmother’s less-busy light over the table, and I think the colorful one would look good in the kitchen. You might be able to take a “tuck” in the chain to shorten it by a couple of links. I am dealing with a similar light/fan question … whether to buy a vintage fixture for the bedroom or find a fan/light that looks right. (I’m picky!)

    • Fans are really nice to have in the bedroom. I would love to have a canopy bed and a chandelier, but I refuse to give up the ceiling fan, so that is never going to happen. Good luck with your decision.

  4. I’m for granny’s fixture in the dining room.

Do you use the fan for lighting in the kitchen or do you have other task lighting? I think the stained glass shade might look better in a more frilly space like a guest room or the back porch. I’m not really feeling that lamp shade with your vintage style.

PS to Douglas: I’m also not a fan of ceiling fans but they do have a certain practical aspect.

    • We do not have any task lighting in the kitchen, unfortunately. We could put that fixture in a bedroom, but we really prefer to have the fans in the bedrooms. Both of us like to sleep with the fan on, and I feel that it is nice to have in the other bedroom for guests. The only other place we could put that fixture would be the basement, but even I might hit my head on it down there!

  5. without reading the other comments first here’s what i would do:
i would keep your grandmothers light in the dining room, move the new light to the kitchen to replace the fan (the new light is big, but the ceiling fan is much bigger!), and get a small rotary fan to put on the kitchen counter, or shelf, or on top of the fridge.

    • That is a good point about how big the ceiling fan is. We do have a nice looking rotary fan that we could put on top of the refridge should we need it.
