What Happened in April – Lo que ocurrió en abril

It has been a long time. This has been the longest that I have gone without blogging since I started this blog in August 2012. I want to continue to post, but I am not sure that I will do so as frequently as I have in the past. My life seems to be getting fuller, and I have other priorities. However, I have made a lot of friends and had a lot of fun with this little site, and I don’t want to give that up.

One of the reasons that it has taken me this long to write is that I have been overwhelmed with the amount of things that I want to tell you. For this reason, I have decided to break it up and give you monthly updates for April, May and June. There is just too much for one post! As it is this is going to be a long post, so make sure that you get the beverage of your choice before settling down.

We returned from Norway on Monday, March 27. Someday, I will write about the remainder of that trip. There are a few photos above to break up my writing. As you know my friend Miguelito and his fiancé, Brian, came that week to get married and Ironman and Spiderman visited us for the first time since they left in December.

On Saturday, April 08 we welcomed a visiting teacher from Rwanda into our homes. Fred was with us for nine eventful days before returning to Africa. We tried to give him an experience that most tourists don’t see. First we took him to the Croton Dam for a walk.

Another day,  we went to walk around the lake at Teatown Preserve. Fred was impressed by the amount of protected land we have just outside of New York City. He wished that something like our park system existed in Rwanda.

My favorite day was when Fred and I went to the New York Botanical Garden where they were setting up a Dale Chihuly exhibit.

The best part was that my brother was working on the installation of one of the pieces. We got to see him at work and have lunch with him and his friend.

Fred returned home on Monday, April 17, and on Tuesday, April 18 I left with another teacher and a group of students for a conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since it was not a school holiday, I had to prepare all of my lessons for the teacher that covered my classes. It is always more work to be absent than it is to go to work! However, I was thrilled to be back in Argentina, at the same school where I had visited the year before. My co-chaperone is a good friend of mine, and it was fun to be able to travel with him. The five students that we brought stayed with host families and we did not have many responsibilities at the conference, so Seth and I had a lot of time to explore the city. We went to a lot of the places that I had visited, but we also went to some new ones.

This shopping center was a block away from our hotel in Palermo. From the outside, it is the platform that the train runs on top of, but inside it is a cute mall.

I was also able to see my friend Miguelito. Unfortunately, Brian was in Malaysia for work. Miguelito and I went to El Caminito, which was a first for me. He also took me to meet Mafalda and to see El Ateneo, an old theater turned book store. I could have spent all day there.

Once the conference ended, our group headed to Patagonia to the town of El Calafate. From there we explored several glaciers before returning home. We stayed in this little hotel a block from Argentino Lake. Cauquenes de Nimez is the name of it, and I highly recommend them.

The next day, we were up before sunrise to take a boat on Lake Argentina. The morning was windy and the waves were huge on the lake, but once we reached the channels, we were able to go up on deck to observe the icebergs.

Our destination for the day was Estancia Cristina, which had once been a working farm, but is now part of a national park. There are rooms to rent there, and someday, I hope to return to stay in one.

We took a 4×4 up into the mountains. The views were stunning.

Fuimos en un todoterreno por la montaña. Las vistas eran impresionantes.

We hiked the last mile to an overlook of the Upsala Glacier. It is a shame that this glacier is rapidly receding. You can see in the last picture the change in the last fifty years.

The next day we traveled to the Perito Moreno Glacier. This one is not receding. There are pieces breaking off all the time, but the glacier also grows about a half a meter a day.

I cannot express how beautiful the scenery was. I thought that I was prepared for what I was about to see since I had seen so many videos and pictures, but nothing could prepare me for what it would be like in person. I was in awe.

Estaba alucinada.

The last day our pick up for the airport was scheduled for 1:30 pm, so we were able to spend the morning in town. I visited the nature preserve a couple of blocks from our hotel and was able to see a lot of birds.

Some day I hope to return to Patagonia, when I have more time to explore. This visit just gave me a little taste of all that there is to see and do. Another activity that I would love to try is a hike on a glacier. I would also like to kayak around the glaciers.

Hopefully, next week I will be able to give you an update on my adventures in May and June.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Wow, you have been a very busy girl! Wonderful photos, I especially loved seeing Patagonia, but all your travel pics are amazing!

  2. Love the pic of you with the blue Chihuly “hat”! You know, he’s from up here. He has a permanent installation at the Seattle Center that we lovingly call “the Chihuly Outlet Store.” That big shiny sculpture in Argentina –is it by Anish Kapoor, the guy who did the “Bean” in Chicago? Patagonia looks amazing … you have certainly had a year of travel!

    • I did know that he is from Seattle. One of Justin’s friends from high school moved there and opened a neon shop. The friend has been working with Chihuly for years, and that is how Justin got this job. He has since worked on another installation for Chihuly and hopes to do more in the future. Chihuly is an amazing artist. Eduardo Catalano is the artist that did the flower. It does remind me of the Bean, though!
