Beauty in the Garden
Last week marked the end of our school year. It was a good week, but I was busy every moment of the day from morning until evening. On Thursday, I was at school until late and arrived at my house happy but exhausted. As soon as I exited my car, my neighbor, Antonio, approached me to ask if I wanted some plants for my garden. Of course, I accepted them; who am I to refuse free plants? He had a loofah plant and garlic chives (not garlic chives as I thought at first).
Antonio suggested that I cut the tops of the chives and wait for the roots to grow back. However, I felt that it was a shame to waste all of those edible flowers. I planted it as it was, and Douglas used the flowers that weekend in a delicious dish.
Ever since we built the trellis in the front yard, Antonio has been talking about giving me a loofah plant. He is excited to see it grow alongside the grapes. It is small now, but I have high hopes for it.
I might have looked silly working in the garden in my skirt and bare feet, I at least had enough sense to take off my high heels before starting to dig, but I was excited to get everything in the ground. At least there is no photographic proof of this. While I was out there I decided to trim the irises in the front bed. They were beautiful a couple of weeks ago, but they were looking rather straggly. They bed looks better now that it is trimmed up. You can see that it was getting quite dark by the time that I had finished.
That was the end of the garden work for the week, but since I have not shown you many pictures of my garden this spring here are a few. Of course, being a loving pet mother, I had to include a few of my precious puppy and puss.

You are so sweet. It has taken a great deal of learning, but I am proud of how far the yard and garden has come since I moved in.
Your garden is looking wonderful. Free plants are always a bonus. I share lots of my extra plants on Freecycle groups. Your chives are just the regular ones, garlic chives have white flowers and bloom towards the end of the season. Regular chives have rounded stems and garlic chives have flat stems.
Thank you so much for your correction! I should have known better because I have garlic chives in a pot, but I have never let them bloom. I will blame that for my error, but at least now I have fixed the post.

I am glad that Fertilizer Fridays are back. The virtual visits to other people’s gardens is fun, plus I learn a lot.
I had no idea that chive flowers were edible! We have a couple blooms on ours, too – I’ll have to find a way to use them.
Your pets are adorable. They look so happy, too. And I always saw a happy pet is the truest sign of a happy home.

Chive flowers make a lovely garnish, but I have also torn them up to put in the food as well. I love edible flowers.
