Edinburgh, 24 March – Edimburgo, 24 de marzo

During our visit to Edinburgh, we stayed at the Princes St. Mercure Hotel. Neither Douglas nor I like to get up early. Therefore, our morning started shortly before 10:00 am when the breakfast buffet closed. Our room was at the back of the hotel, but we had a lovely view from the dining room overlooking Princes St. Garden, the Scott Monument and the Edinburgh Castle. I apologize for the lousy phone pictures.

After breakfast we walked up to Old Town to visit the National Museum of Scotland. Taylor, the niece we were visiting, had class that morning, but luckily, we are used to traveling alone and Edinburgh is an easy city to navigate. This first picture was taken in front of the National Gallery looking up towards Old Town. The second picture was taken near the top of the hill looking back at our hotel on Princes St.

The National Museum of Scotland is housed in two antithetical buildings. The history of Scotland, starting back in the prehistoric era is in the modern building on the corner of Chambers St. and George IV Bridge. The older building on Chambers St. contains the rest of the collection. This museum like most in Edinburgh is free. We did make the suggested donation.

I liked that there were lots of things for children to do throughout the museum. Douglas enjoyed those exhibits as well, particularly the ones where he was able to dress up.

The museum is very well thought out, and the walls are decorated as well. I really like the wood and clay treatments on these walls.

I was taking pictures left and right. I suppose that this surprises you, but I wanted to remember everything.

Yo estaba sacando fotos a diestra y a siniestra.

Douglas’ favorite part by far was being able to see the Flying Scotsman’s bike in person. I saw it first and then had to wait anxiously for him to turn the corner to see it for himself. It took him a moment to realize what it was, and then he did not want to leave. If you have never seen the movie The Flying Scotsman, we highly recommend it. It is based on a true story.

Si nunca has visto la película The Flying Scotsman, te la recomendamos. Está basada en una historia real.

By the time we finished the history of Scotland, we had already been in the museum for about four hours. We went to look at the Millennial Clock and a few other things, but then we went to the café to sit for a moment and have tea. I was exhausted and our day had hardly begun.

After the museum we went to see Greyfriars Bobby across the street.

After that of course we had to go visit his grave in front of Greyfriars Kirk (church) and that of his master in the graveyard.

I also took a million pictures of the kirkyard (cemetery). I will spare you all but a few. I happen to love cemeteries, but I know that not everyone shares my passion. Douglas was disturbed by this one, because many of the headstones have collapsed, and they have been left as they fell.

When Douglas finally dragged me out of the kirkyard, we walked back down George IV Bridge toward the Royal Mile, stopping to take pictures and visit the public library.

Once on the Royal Mile, we visited a few shops and I bought Douglas the hat you will see him wearing for the rest of the trip.

My favorite place was the Tron Kirk which has been converted into a market. It was inhabited by its very own mad hatter who is a phenomenal painter. It was also here that I saw a necklace and fell in love. I did not buy it until the very last day of our trip because I just could not get it out of my mind.

We also took some time to explore a few closes (alleyways).

At the end of the Royal Mile is the Scottish Parliament. We never did go in, but we passed by it several times.

Across the street from the Parliament is Holyrood Palace (Palace of the Holy Cross) and to the south is Holyrood Park. As we walked around Queen’s Dr. I found a good climbing tree.

We continued our walk back into town through Edinburgh University, where there was a group of students protesting in tents. We found out later that they were lock in there for the night, but I forget what they were protesting. I think that it was an environmental issue. Here are the pictures I took on the walk.

We had dinner at Mum’s, and the food was delicious. I enjoyed it so much that I was too busy eating to take pictures. Well, I did get one picture of Douglas’ meat pie.

That evening we went to a bar to see Taylor’s professor’s band, the Chilli Dogs.

While there we got our second wind. Taylor ended up leaving before we did, but we headed back to the hotel before midnight. I took more pictures on our walk back.

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. c’mon! As soon as I saw the bike I knew who’s it was. I was just in disbelief that I was actually seeing it.

  2. amazing post – the pictures are wonderful. the bike is amazing once you know the story behind it (sorry to say i didn’t, but i have added it to our movie list after watching the trailer). love the market with the mad hatter – so cool!

  3. Great pix! I would love to visit Edinburgh. The UK is our next major travel destination. I’ll have to check out the story of the bike. The cracked clay wall with the snaky design in the museum is by one of my favorite artists, Andy Goldsworthy.

  4. You guys are hilarious and adorable! I love the artful displays at the museum, all of the beautiful architecture and that fat pigeon! I love and miss you tons!
