What Do Lanterns, a Pitcher and a Wrench Have in Common?

A) They are things that Douglas and I find more interesting than most people would.

B) They are things that were in the trash.

C) They are not items related to Christmas.

D) All of the above.

As a blogger, it is my responsibility to write about Christmas decorations, because, as you are well aware, it is December. Many blogs that I follow have been posting away about gifts, wreaths and other holiday paraphernalia for well over a month. At the risk of having my blog license revoked, I must admit that I have not yet done any decorating for Christmas. Neither have I bought or made any gifts. I completely understand if you stop reading now and never return.

If you are kind enough to stay with me, I have prepared a little something about some things that Douglas and I found before leaving for Michigan last week.

A lantern, a pitcher and a wrench

The first were these lanterns that I passed on my way to work. I made it about two blocks past them before I had to turn around to check them out. I was afraid that they would haunt me forever if I did not, at the very least, inspect them before leaving them behind. Of course, once I stopped, it was impossible for me to abandon them there to be taken to the dump. They are filthy, and I may not keep them in the long run, but I had to at least give them the chance to turn into something beautiful.

Dirty lanterns

I particularly liked that they came with two hooks from which to hang them. Even if I do not keep the lanterns, I am sure that the hooks will be useful.

Dirty lanterns

After work, I came home to unload my treasures, and I had to laugh. Because there on the porch were a wrench and a pitcher that I was quite sure had not been there that morning. It seems that my dear husband had done some picking of his own. I approve of both of his finds.

Pitcher and wrench

The pitcher is of good quality. I am not sure that I will use it as a pitcher, since we do not use them often. It will make a nice vase.

Pitcher

I am not sure what metal it is made from, but it is light as if it were made of tin. The stamp on the bottom states that it is “Hand Forged Everlast Metal.”

The wrench is to heavy what the pitcher is to light. That sucker is hefty! It also has a nice point on the end of it. I am thinking that if I fail to find another use for it, I am going to keep it beside my bed. That way in case of an intruder or a zombie apocalypse I will be able to stun and stab. It is always good to be prepared.

Wrench

So, there you have it. Our collection of treasures continues to grow. It will not be long before we cease to fit in the Cape of Dreams!

Update: After I wrote this, but before it was posted, I happened to read this post over at A Goode House. I guess great minds do think alike. Stacey’s mind is slightly greater than mine, however, because her post is better.

Happy Homemaking!

P.S. The correct answer is, of course, D.

About

I am a teacher, traveler, artist, writer, homemaker and a whole lot more. In January 2009, I bought the Cape of Dreams. It was the second house that I had ever owned, but it was the first that I bought by myself. I now live in the house with my husband Douglas, our dog Kahlua, and Crème de Menthe, the cat. Because, what life is complete without a little Kahlua and Cream? I love arts and crafts of all kinds, and I refinish furniture as well. We are slowly redoing our entire house. 1. Great minds DO think alike! I LOVE what you guys found. If anyone gets this you know I certainly do. We’re kindred spirits! Christmas can wait… there’s good junk to be found. 🙂

I think the lanterns are really cool. Are they metal? And the pitcher… I would be drilling a hole in the bottom and putting a plant in it. You know me and plants… we love each other. (well, I love them more than they love me sometimes). And sometimes you just have to “throw and wrench into it”. (laughing). LOVE IT ALL, Jessica.

    • Stacey, the lanterns are metal! I couldn’t believe it. I was so sure that they would be plastic, which is why I originally passed them. I never would have picked them up if they were plastic. I cannot wait to clean them up.

That pitcher might just end up with a plant in it. I love that idea, even though Douglas is not going to let me drill a hole in it.

  2. She better not be drilling any holes in my pitcher! 🙂
I was thinking vase for it as well, but also occasional beer pitcher when we have guests. I like the idea for the wrench, I was merely thinking of mounting it next to my drill press that I salvaged a couple years ago (once I get around to putting that up as well). We’ll have to wait and see on the lanterns, I have some vague ideas if she doesn’t, and I can use the hooks for my antique (citronella) oil lanterns that I got from a yard sale last year…

  3. oh, and the pitcher and the wrench were already on the porch that morning, I found them while running Kahlua the previous night. That wrench was a bugger to run with. We found it early in our mile run. We know you’re not a morning person though Jessica, so not surprised you missed them, but glad you found the lanterns…

  4. I bet the lanterns will look great once they’re cleaned up. Imagine them with candles or electric votives, flickering away in your backyard on summer evening. Ahh … summer …

    • Summer does seem really far away, but I am sure that it will come sooner than we really want. I do think that these lanterns are going to be really beautiful.
